When was the last time that you had spoken to someone about depression? Well if you happen to live in Asia the chances are that the conversation about depression will most likely be cut short. Talking about issues like mental stress and seeking help for it is something that is still considered taboo in most Asian cultures due to it’s social implications. It is still believed by most that stressful situations could just be pushed aside instead of addressed by a medical professional.

Most people undergoing depression usually look like you and me. Here is how you are able to easily identify the symptoms:

  • Feeling of helplessness and hopelessness
  • Loss of interest in daily activities
  • Appetite or weight changes
  • Sleep changes
  • Loss of energy
  • Anger or irritability

This year, let us learn to be more accepting and understanding to those around us with issues of depression and start the conversation by asking #HOWRU. Everyone views stress differently so listen but don’t judge and you can play an active part to reduce the social stigma and bring hope to those around you. Give hope today, this world suicide prevention day!

SOS will be conducting their “Wear your heart on your wrist” campaign on 10 September 2016 in Singapore. Learn where you can get your wearable plasters at their website.
