Do You Have Hope in Your Closet?

Spending time with clients as they solve their wardrobe woes is such a pleasure for me. They tell me stories of where and when they wore each piece. Some of them do not fit anymore. Some of them are dated. Will they easily release them? The answer is NO! I bet at this point you are smiling as you have experienced these emotions many times.

Spending time in Phyllis's closet was always a treat. She had beautiful everyday wear as well as designer lovelies. There was always that "Red Suit!" This piece had beautiful buttons and a luxurious fabric. This suit had not fit in many years. It was truly classic and timeless. Every time I tried to release it from that cramped space the answer was a resounding no. "Someday I may get into it again" she explained. Are you smiling and relating again? Then one day it happened. She was ready to say goodbye to that old friend.

The next day I entered our favorite consignment store with an armload of her past life favorites. A young woman approached me and asked if she could try on that red suit. It was her size. She lamented that her husband had left her with three children. She had never worked but she had a job interview the next day and all she owned were mom clothes. Off she went to the fitting room. I informed the owner that she had the suit and explained her situation and asked for a good price.

Days later I called to inquire about how this had ended and if the young woman did purchase the suit. The owner told me that indeed she had heard the woman's story and gave her a great price on the red piece. Excitedly the owner shared that she had received a call the next day and the lady was so excited and exclaimed " Thank You! That beautiful red suit got me the job!" We all know that the confidence she felt on the inside while wearing this piece on the outside had truly given this young woman the job. I quickly called Phyllis and told her the story. "You got a woman in need a job today," I said. There was silence on the other end of the line. Then I heard these words. "Come and get the rest of these things that I have been holding on to." She implored.
