Here's a pest management strategy that'll either save you the cost of an exterminator, or rack up a small fortune in hospital bills.
It takes about two minutes for YouTube user Richard Reich to blast a hornet's nest off the side of a shed using what he said is the standard spray nozzle on a garden hose. In the video description, he claims to have stood 10 feet away while spraying the nest, which sloughs away like wet paper (which it pretty much is).
Reich claims the hornets won't attack him because he's too far away to register as a threat to the colony. He then moves in to swat away some of the bugs with a badminton racket, which, while oddly satisfying, doesn't seem like the safest thing to do. Still, it's probably safer than torching the whole thing with a homemade flamethrower.
Yes, the Internet is ripe with theories and demonstrations on how to dispose of wasp nests, but we'd still recommend calling a professional: especially after watching how easy it is to fail.
Not surprisingly, the Internet is also ripe with videos of people who have let stinging insect nests get way out of control. Seriously, wouldn't you want to do away with a problem like this once you discover it, and way before it grows enormous?
