Hosni Mubarak Trial: A Look At The Former Egyptian President's Political Career (PHOTOS)

PHOTOS: A Look Back At Hosni Mubarak's Turbulent Career

Desposed Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is due to appear in court on Wednesday, the latest twist in what has turned out to be an increasingly turbulent political career.

As the BBC reports, the 83-year-old Mubarak -- who was forced to step down after a popular uprising in February -- has been charged with corruption and the killing of pro-democracy demonstrators. The embattled former leader is scheduled to be flown Wednesday from his hospital bed in the Red Sea resort town of Sharm el Sheikh, where he has been on house arrest and in questionable health since April, to a specially-constructed metal cage at the trial's venue, the Police Academy on the outskirts of Cairo, the Wall Street Journal reports.

For many Egyptians -- and, indeed, the Arab world -- Mubarak's trial will be unprecedented, the first time a leader overthrown by his own people will be on a televised trial and in plain view.
