"House" (Mon., 8 p.m. EST on Fox) returned from the holiday break with the good doctor determined to do everything he could to convince Foreman to sign off on the paperwork that would allow him to get the ankle monitor off. He took the case of the week, involving a man with early onset Alzheimer's and turned it into an elaborate power grab with Foreman.
The two men went back and forth, trying to outthink and outmaneuver one another, while the patient wandered out of the hospital and nearly died from the cold. Of course, as this is "House," things worked out in the end and he was cured and may even see improvements to his mental faculties beyond what he had when he came in.
Thematically, the episode explored couples. There was the dutiful wife who struggled emotionally with staying by her husband's side after so many years of his long battle with dementia. And then there was Dr. Wilson's patient who admitted to enjoying an asexual relationship. The latter case turned into a bet whereby House refused to believe it was a genuine choice.
He was of course right, as it was a tumor that was keeping the guy asexual, and his lady was just playing along. Back on the main case, in a rare moment it was Dr. Foreman who had the random "a-ha!" moment that led to the proper diagnosis. House, surprisingly, took the news graciously as if the patient's health was more important than winning. After this moment of professional respect, Foreman returned the favor by respecting House enough to approve getting the monitor removed. Dr. House is a free man!
