When it comes to buying a suit, you probably know it's important to sweat the details. And one key consideration you may not be thinking about is how many buttons should be on your jacket. Two is the gold standard and should be where you focus your attention if you're a corporate guy looking for a work suit. Three is probably best left to the Italian street-style gods, mod enthusiasts, and NBA players--it can be a lot of look to pull off. But one button suits, the less-often-found silhouettes of the suiting world, can be the secret weapon for guys looking to cut a taller, leaner figure just like John Legend (in Calvin Klein Collection) at the premiere of his new TV show Underground last night (above).
Because the button stance is lower and the "V" shape created by that closure is deeper, the one-button suit tends to create an illusion of height and slimness. On a shorter guy with less torso to go around, it also keeps things clean and simple. If you're under 6" tall and don't work in a conservative office, consider going into the store knowing this is where you want to take things. It might not get you all the way to the checkout line, but it'll at least narrow down your options.
