Besides Jungian, Rogerian, Attachment, Relational, Existential, Cognitive Behavioral, Humanistic, Psychodynamic, Transpersonal - and my personal favorite, "Drive-Thru Therapy" - one of the modalities I employ as a therapist and counselor is called "Solutions Focused." Instead of looking backwards and blaming possible or probable causes, Solutions Focused Therapy finds the exceptions where future desirable and measurable goals are already being achieved.
The beautiful and poignant film "Tomorrow" by Cyril Dion and Melanie Laurent is Solutions Focused Therapy for the planet earth. It is the ideal film for all young people worldwide to watch in order to help them make responsible choices that will effect their children and grandchildren.
"Tomorrow" is divided into five sections - Agriculture, Energy, Economy, Democracy, and Education - and instead of harping on what is wrong with our current systems, "Tomorrow" displays models that work, models that are functional, models that are sustainable.
The directors demonstrate how to create millions of jobs by moving money from Wall Street to main street, how to feed all of the people on the planet with delicious and healthy foods without using any fossil fuels or chemicals, how to diminish our dependency on fossil fuels and make money at the same time, how to live up to the ideals of real democracy, and how to educate a new generation of responsible and happy human beings.
I commend Francois Truffart for programing this transformational documentary - winner the Cesar Award for Best Documentary in France - at the COLCOA French Film Festival in Los Angeles. I was surprised to learn that they have not yet secured American distribution. Cyril told me, "It is a complete mystery to us because the movie made seven millions dollars at the box office in France and has been bought for distribution in 30 countries - yet nothing is happening in the U.S. so far! Although the majority of the movie is in English and some of our best initiatives are taking place in the United States, distributors seem to believe that audiences only want to hear bad news. However, this is not true! We need good news, forward-thinking solutions, hope, and a desirable vision of the world that our children will inherit."
