What is the benefit of joining an LPO (legal process outsourcing) in India and how is the experience going to enhance my future opportunities? originally appeared on Quora - the place to gain and share knowledge, empowering people to learn from others and better understand the world.
There’s no denying the fact that legal process outsourcing (LPO) has a presence in the U.S. legal arena. As platforms like LawTrades are reshaping the legal experience for businesses, the big traditional law firms are trying their best to make up for their increasingly large flaws. One of their drawbacks is high hourly billing. That’s why these firms employ a cheaper workforce in India, while slashing jobs that had been held by Americans. Of course, there are other reasons for law firms to turn to LPO like the different time zones allowing work to be done when American lawyers are sleeping. A lot of people are shocked when they hear that law firms are outsourcing work overseas. To quiet concerns, LPOs hire American lawyers to supervise things.
In terms of the benefits for working for an LPO, it certainly provides you with a “niche.” While some lawyers prefer to focus on brain-surgery mess ups or software patents, you could certainly make LPOs in India your speciality. I think it comes down to lifestyle. Would you be content with a supervisory role in a distant land? If so, it’s probably a good opportunity. After years of experience working for an LPO, an American law firm could hire you to manage the LPO process from home. Alternatively, you could work for an American company like Thomson Reuters who deals with LPO too.
