Two of my one-on-one clients said the same thing during their private sessions: "I'm overwhelmed."
In this crazy, busy, competitive world, feeling overwhelmed is the status quo. If you are feeling overwhelmed, too, it's easy to see why:
- You're on the go 24/7; it's like a never-ending story.
- You feel you are pulled in 100 different directions at once.
- Your to-do list never gets shorter.
- There is no time to enjoy your accomplishments.
- There's always one more goal to tackle.
- Deadlines constantly loom.
- And you are exhausted.
I'm going to be honest with you: That's not living. And life is too short to feel that much pressure every day.
How do you make this all stop?
The answer is you look within.
YOU have to make the switch.
Here are three mindset-switching strategies to try:
Mindset switching strategy #1: Let go of thinking you have to do everything yourself.
Write everything out so you can actually see what you need to do. Then, pick out the tasks you DON'T want to do. Are these tasks something you can get someone else to do instead?
Here's a simple example: Cleaning your house. Unless that is your favorite thing to do, delegate it to someone else who can do it for you. Chances are they can do it faster and better than you can. Yes, you might need to hire a housecleaner, but isn't your precious time and peace of mind worth the cost?
Next, identify items that require attention now. If it doesn't have to be done now, take it off your plate and put it in the parking lot for items to be dealt with later. And don't worry about it now.
By letting go and delegating it to someone who can do it better, you free your time and your energy to do what you really want and need to do.
Mindset switching strategy #2: Free yourself so that you can focus on your "genius work."
Spend time thinking about your genius work. If you aren't sure what it is, ask yourself these questions:
- What do you love to do?
- What do you do better than others?
- What do you do effortlessly?
- What makes you happy?
- What makes you feel proud?
- What work do people praise about you?
- What are you passionate about?
Imagine how many more things you could accomplish if you would allow yourself to focus on your genius work.
Mindset switching strategy #3: Channel and choose the positive reality.
But your reality is more than just chaos.
In his book Before Happiness, my idol Shawn Achor, a positive psychologist, discusses a study on stress he did with Yale researchers at UBS. He tested whether people could change the way they perceived stress, and reduce the negative effects of stress on the brain and body.
The process they asked the test subjects to use in the study included:
1. Becoming aware of the stress
2. Looking for the meaning behind the stress
3. Channeling the stress to improve motivation and productivity
Achor said, " ...the stress became more beneficial, as evidenced by gains in the managers' work effectiveness and improvements in their health. And it's all because they were able to see that alternate reality in which stress could have positive effects on the brain and the body."
Your brain automatically chooses which reality you see.
That means you must decide to see that there are other realities.
You can channel and choose to see the positive reality, rather than the chaos caused by stress.
My overwhelmed client realized by the end of our coaching session that she actually wasn't in the bad place that she thought she was.
She realized that by trying to do everything herself, she was stressing herself out. She was filling her plate with things that she could put off until later or that could be done by someone else.
She also realized she had a support system that she could reach out to when she needed it.
Her biggest A-HA moment came when she realized her mind automatically expected to see what was bad in her life, rather than looking for what was good in her life.
Her mindset change was the key to her clearing the chaos and overwhelm and seeing what was good.
By simply switching what you choose to see, you will feel calm, balanced, confident, full of energy, organized, and happy, which will enable you to do more of your genius work.
My mission is to help people shine. I work with experienced professionals on mindset and strategy to help them be confident, happy and successful on their own terms.
