Looking to celebrate Cinco de Mayo like a true Mexican? Well that won't happen because they don't celebrate the holiday in Mexico. While it does reference historic events, it's a day North Americans have largely re-appropriated so they could throw "fiestas" with salsa, sombreros, and margaritas.

Julia Llanos of Hello Dudettes is here to learn you a thing or two about Mexican culture. In her Cinco de Mayo video she pokes fun at Mexican stereotypes in order to bring awareness to the fact that the country is about more than spring break trips and tequila shots.

Mexico and it's people have a rich culture, history and many traditions that should be celebrated, but Cinco de Mayo is not one of them. Llanos wants you to celebrate her native country but in a way that does not include stereotypes. As she tells it, "Mexico and our people are not just a sombrero, tequila and moustache. Cinco de Mayo is a made up tradition for people to celebrate "Mexico", but we should celebrate what Mexico truly is, a country of hard working people, a rich culture, music, and solidarity."

So, don't be like this guy:

And if you want to celebrate Mexico and it's heritage, Mexico's Independence Day is September 16th.
