There's something irresistible about a space where you can put up your feet and sink into the sofa for an evening of doing absolutely nothing. The family room is that space where comfort is king, but that doesn't mean it can't be beautiful. Our designers shared their tips for decorating a family room worth coming home to.
The Sofa
When you're planning to spend a lot of time on a piece of furniture (lounging, nappy, cuddled up watching movies), you want to look for deep seats that allow you to curl up comfortably. Also, while comfort is key, you also want to look for a piece that's tailored and holds its shape so that it doesn't look disheveled every time you sit down. Look for features like a single seat cushion or a tight back. As for materials, look for comfortable, durable fabrics-like leather, velvet, wool, and linen-in forgiving shades.
The Chairs
Create a space that's conducive to conversation by arranging the seating so that it faces the couch. Also, choose chairs that are just as comfy as the couch so that your guests want to sit down and stay awhile. (And no, that doesn't mean a set of matching recliners with drink holders in the armrests.)
The Coffee Table
If you opt for a traditional coffee table, choose one that can stand up to a lot of wear from dishes, glasses, and the occasional pair of lounging feet. A comfier alternative is an ottoman, which doubles as extra seating and allows extra room to stretch up. Just top it off with a tray to hold things like snacks, beverages, and remote controls.
The Curtains
Curtains are an essential element in family rooms, from both a decorative and functional standpoint. They add a visual and physical warmth, and they tie the room together. They also help absorb sound, so whether you're having a get together with friends or engaged in some serious binge watching, you won't feel like you're stuck in a too-loud restaurant.
The Rug
Another great way to absorb sound is with an area rug, which also ups a room's cozy factor. Choose a soft, plush version that feels good on bare feet. So, think more along the lines of sheepskin, not sisal.
The Lighting
A family room should feel warm and intimate, so steer clear of harsh overhead lighting. Instead, opt for soft, layered lighting from floor lamps, table lamps, and other dimmable options.
The Accessories
It's always the details that complete the room, but that's especially true in the case of family rooms. Top off the sofa and chairs with soft, durable throw, snuggle-ready pillows and blankets. Display some family photos in sleek, coordinating frames, and if you hang them on the wall, place them in a series of three. Complete the room with books and items that have special meaning to you.
