Ramen is one of those foods that, like hummus and pad thai, went from obscure ethnic food to totally ubiquitous staple in America with astonishing speed. We are all ramen lovers now.
But our enthusiasm for the taste and comforting richness of ramen grew faster than our knowledge about this venerable Japanese food, which is why we're so glad that the Dallas Morning News made this excellent video with chef Teiichi Sakurai, chef of Dallas's hot new Ten Ramen Shop, explaining how people should eat ramen.
It turns out that they key to maximizing your enjoyment of a bowl of ramen is to eat quickly. The size of most ramen bowls may make you believe that eating it is a marathon -- but in fact, it should be a sprint.
"One thing I want you to avoid is taking too much time," Sakurai says. "The ramen noodle is going to expand and overflow in the bowl, so eat [as quickly] as you can. Eating a bowl of ramen shouldn't take more than five minutes."
To get your speed up, Sakurai recommends slurping the noodles with utmost vigor. And once you've eaten all of those, you can feel free to pick up the bowl and drink the luscious broth like a cup of coffee. Yum.
