Here in Seattle it’s starting to feel like summer after what felt like an endlessly gray winter. Everyone is ready to get outside and enjoy the summer weather, activities, trips and playtime. And while it’s easy to get giddy in the rush to get outdoors with our children, don’t forget that it’s important to keep safety in mind.

At Poppy HQ we’re always thinking about how to play safe. Here are my best tips for staying safe as a family, while having fun in the sun!

In the sun:

  • Always apply sunscreen - even if it’s overcast out or you’re just planning a day in the shade. Apply it every two hours for maximum coverage. Have everyone wear a hat to shield their faces from the harsh rays of the sun.
  • Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Don’t leave the house without water for everyone in your family, even animals, and be sure that you have plenty in stock for long day trips away from home.
  • Take breaks from the heat. Limit your time outside if temperatures are hot in your area, such as 80 degrees or higher. Ideally, take a break inside during the peak sun exposure hours between 11am-3pm.

At the park:

  • Keep your children within eyesight and younger children, within reach.
  • When you arrive, do a quick scan of the park to see if there is anyone or anything that looks out of place.
  • Avoid answering any personal questions from strangers about your family and remind your kids not to freely give out their personal information either.
  • Setting boundaries is key. Let your children know exactly where they can run and play, so that they feel a sense of freedom within the limits that you’ve set.

In the great outdoors:

  • Organize and lead the kiddos in age-appropriate play. For example, if there are kids of multiple ages, try options that everyone can safely participate in and enjoy. Blowing bubbles or a competing in a simple obstacle course are always fun ideas.
  • If you’re planning any time at the pool, be sure that everyone practices full water safety and takes precautions depending on their skill level. For example, even small toddler pools can be dangerous for little ones if children are left unattended. Teach your child about pool and water safety starting at a young age to ensure smart, lifelong habits.
  • If you’re heading to the ocean, lake or river, exercise similar precautions with your children and remind them about water safety tips before your arrival.
  • Scan and assess outside play areas for any potentially dangerous situations. For example, remove any gardening tools or chemicals left out, which children could be tempted by.

Those are some simple, yet important, safety tips to keep in mind while you enjoy the best part of summer-- the precious quality time with our loved ones. Get out there, get some exercise, bask in nature and have fun while doing it!
