It was just this September when I awoke teary-eyed and with a strong shudder, I wasn't cold..my soul had finally come to the reason why my recent business wasn't making the movements I wanted: It wasn't me. I had allowed outside involvement create and launch a business that not only didn't resonate with me, but made me feel confused and sick when people made comments like "I saw your website". In fact, even my website was confusing...using my political background as its foundation, I had people calling me asking me if I was running for office again and not offering business media/marketing management assistance.
At that moment, I emailed a goodbye to my current business coach and sat down in my favorite area of my house with a Snapple and a notebook. Taking a deep breath, I rebranded back to me and now I have a business I love to talk about and am looking forward to every moment.
The most amazing thing was, literally the day I launched I was inundated with ladies that were in the same storm I just recently escaped from. One prospect even stated she prayed to God for me because she was having such a hard time really evolving her message and her business into what she truly envisioned.
After looking even deeper, I realized businesses sometimes need a rebrand if only to save the business owner from becoming an un-authentic and emotional wreck. The health of the owner is just as important as the health of the business. But before the leap to another venture can openly be taken, there are a few things you need to have on your belt to be prepared.
Do a Post-Mortem of Your Current Business
Every failure, even the ones you label yourself as a failure, carry lessons. Before you hang out your new shingle or even consider its design, review the last business. What went right? What went wrong? What did you hate to do? What did you love to do? Take detailed notes of your answers and put them on the side ready to compare with the brainstorm of your new business. You may be surprised how many errors you avoid by just reminding yourself of the past.
Block Out Suggestions on the Brand Until Its Developed Into Your Vision
With the era of webinars, e-books, podcasts and discount seminars, we as entrepreneurs have tips and tricks coming out of our ears and with that confusion is inevitable; especially during a rebrand. Before looking for expertise, make sure your gifts, passions and self are invested into the brand. This way you are prepared to make sure whatever assistance may come, you know how much of an impact (if at all) it should have on the final product that is your brand.
If You Cannot Do it Yet Tomorrow..Learn While Your Shingle is Out There
Richard Branson recently said, "If someone offers you an amazing opportunity and you are not sure you can do it, say yes-then learn how to do it later." To me the same goes for if your spirit is telling you about a passion or desire to do a certain offering. Not only will you be excited by the opportunity to learn but you will be more of a servant to others because you are both passionate about the opportunity available.
The bottom line of this task that so many of us will take at least once in our business lives is that rebranding needs to be a personal journey of confidence and self-understanding. This includes being clear of not only of what you can/cannot do but also what you can/cannot see yourself doing for the rest of your life. We live today in an amazing world of opportunities where you can literally reinvent yourself with just a few clicks on your Facebook page, but it is up to you to make sure that reinvention is truly a reflection of you.
