Want to carve out a space of your own? Author Sally Coulthard suggests heading outside. Shed Decor (Lark Crafts, $25), Coulthard's new book, features hundreds of ideas that will help you turn a garden shed into a well-appointed retreat.
The country shed above offers an indoor space to gather that is surrounded by nature. The wood floors were painted to mimic checkerboard tile.
This modern, 290-square-foot solid-timber structure is a study in micro-living. The snug space includes a living room, kitchenette, bathroom and bedroom, all flooded with natural light thanks to picture windows and sliding glass doors.
To make the most of the space in this shed, the owners went vertical, building a loft above the kitchen area that fits a bed.
When working with minimal square footage, Coulthard recommends maximizing light. One way to accomplish this: white paint and furnishings.
