HRC Announces $100,000 Donation For Russia's Gay Community

HRC Makes HUGE Contribution To Russia's LGBT Community

The Human Rights Campaign made a huge announcement today about their involvement in aiding members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community living in Russia: a $100,000 donation to the Russia Freedom Fund.

Made possible through the HRC's "Love Conquers Hate" campaign, the donation is a response to the pervasive climate of fear and violence currently plaguing LGBT Russians since the country passed anti-gay "propaganda" legislation last summer. Since the government's institutionalization of homophobia, LGBT Russians have reportedly been subjected to public acts of violence and private acts of torture, as well as numerous threats to their civil liberties.

“With less than two months until the Sochi Olympic Games, it’s time to harness the tidal wave of support for Russia’s LGBT community emerging around the world,” HRC President Chad Griffin said in a statement to The Huffington Post. “Now more than ever, we must expose the Russian government’s hateful campaign against its own people and support LGBT Russians enduring oppression and violence every day.”
