HUD Reentry-Reintegration Housing Guidance

Earlier this year, we said, "All levels of government should adopt requirements making it clear housing that benefits from government funding cannot be denied to those with a criminal justice history unless there is a legitimate public safety reason for doing so." Our views on housing for those reentering communities from incarceration are embodied in our blog post that appeared this past September: Reentry Supportive Housing Gaining Traction.

Today, we are delighted to see the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development take a big step toward meeting our call for fairness by issuing: Guidance for Public Housing Agencies and Owners of Federally-Assisted Housing on Excluding the Use of Arrest Records in Housing Decisions. This afternoon in Newark, NJ, President Obama also highlighted a new $8.7 million supportive housing demonstration grant to address homelessness and reduce recidivism among the justice-involved population.
