A large crowd grew wild and unruly on Sunday night, following the end of the Vans U.S. Open of Surfing, CBS Los Angeles reported.

It is not known what sparked the fighting, but police described the incident as a "major event."

Witnesses and police told L.A. Now that the fighting broke out around 7 p.m., shortly after the competition ended.
