Hurricane Tomas Hits Haiti: How To Help

This week, aid workers and government officials scrambled to warn homeless Haitians about the dangers of severe flooding ahead of a storm threatening the island.

Hurricane Tomas made landfall Friday morning, bringing with it intense winds and rains in some parts of the country.

The Los Angeles Times reports,

The edges of Hurricane Tomas raked over the southern peninsula of Haiti on Friday, flooding several cities and causing anxiety as it edged closer to the capital, where more than 1 million people remain in tent camps following the Jan. 12 earthquake.

The U.S. military dispatched the USS Iwo Jima to bring humanitarian aid to Haitian communities.

Dozens of nonprofit organizations are also on the ground providing assistance to Haitians in need of shelter, water and food -- as well as medical supplies to curb the growing cholera epidemic. Supporters can donate to help relief operations.

  • Operation USA is bringing emergency supplies to Jacmel, Haiti. You can support their work by donating online or texting "AID" to 50555 to donate10.

  • Doctors Without Borders is working to address the cholera outbreak by providing medical care to sick Haitians. You can make a contribution online to help Doctors Without Borders.

  • The International Rescue Committee is assisting Haitians affected the hurricane and continuing cholera prevention efforts in 30 camps in Port-au-Prince. To support the IRC's work, donate online or text "RESCUE" to 25383 to donate $10.

  • The Red Cross helped prepare Haitian communities for the floods. Now, the organization will turn its attention to distributing the shelter kits, hygiene packets and cooking supplies they prepared ahead of the storm. Individuals can support the Red Cross' efforts by making a donation.

  • Partners In Health is also focusing on treating cholera patients. The organization is asking supporters to spread the word about the crisis via e-mail and social media. In addition to raising awareness, you can donate to help fund cholera treatment.

  • Oxfam aid workers are in Haiti mounting public health campaigns to help the public stay safe from cholera and other diseases. Supporters can contribute online to support the organization's work.
