With my grandson Antoine

I am an immigrant, my life is not decidedly different from the life of any other immigrant. I struggle with the burdensome paperwork to get into the system. I seek to know and become part of the culture in which I live and sometimes I fail. I work hard at the language and have my best conversations with little kids who are at the same level. I seek both that which is familiar while celebrating that which is different. I scour stores for the ingredients I use to cook and learn to adapt recipes when they are not available. I sometimes wonder why I did it, and consider going home and then....

I am grateful I got out as I look at what is happening in America. I see the only candidate worthy shot down and forced to endorse his opponent. I see the backdoor deals as obvious and am unable to believe that Americans do not see what is happening, but then I realize, the media is mostly propaganda. Goebbels would have been thrilled to see how controlled the information is, even the internet. I try to share or link pages and my friends find them ‘unavailable’ .

See my grandson in the photo above, notice his skin color. I do not want my grandson to grow up black in the United States of Racism. It will take a lot of work and a lot of money I don’t have at the moment to get my entire family over here, but my goal will not change.

Tim, Antoine’s father will be able to return to school, no longer having to work as much to support the two children. His children can be raised in a country where they are simply German children, not black children.

I cannot pretend there is no racism here, there is, but it is subtle, not discriminatory. People will, without thinking refer to them as immigrants, yet I will be called an ex-pat.

I am an immigrant too.
