It's Thanksgiving.

Today, I'm thankful for...

My little brother, who seems to be growing up much too fast and yet is still just a child, because he can seem so wise at times but also so silly, and knows all the small ways to make me smile.

My younger sister, because her laughter sounds like music and her smile can light up a room. Because she's beautiful and doesn't even know it, and no one else can understand my sense of humor. Because around her, I can truly be myself.

My mom and her constant encouragement--she's always told me to take life as it comes, to relax and to enjoy what I have. She's made me the person I am today, and I thank her for it.

My dad for his discipline and his constant strength, because he's taught me, both through his words and his actions, the value of hard work and determination.

My best friend, because he's stuck with me through thick and thin and understands me better than I do myself, and because he's changed my life.

My teachers, for being my role models and shaping the way I look at the world. For motivating me and teaching me not only about their subjects, but about life.

Kids and adults who have helped our We Care Act projects and the disaster victims for inspiring me to make a difference in the world through their own selfless actions to change life as we know it.

The people I've seen only in passing, because something about them, whether it's the way they walk or their hair color or how they smile, has worked its way into my writing.

And even our dog Lemon, although I hated her when she first joined our family, because she's taught me responsibility and unconditional love.

Thanksgiving's typically a day to look inwards, to be grateful for what we have. But at the same time, we should be giving other people a reason to be thankful too. So yes, let's eat our turkey and cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie in front of a roaring fire and family members gathered all around, and let's laugh and smile and enjoy the holidays. But can we also make time to donate to the less fortunate, to those suffering around the world? Can we take the time to make one mouse click, sitting in our homes while others have no home to return to?

Please donate for a school in Haiti that needs a building and textbooks for their students. Each textbook is just $5. To give a student a textbook for all his/her classes, it's only $25. Schools, organizations, and individuals are also welcome to raise funds for this project.
