Obviously, I have not posted for a while. Not since November 8, 2016. I have been in recovery since that date, wondering if I had somehow wandered into a nightmarish alternate reality.
No. Incredibly enough, this is real. The first week of the Trump Administration has thrown cold water on my face, woken my American ire, and brought out the patriot in me. Who knew?
First, I never believed in my heart that this man could actually win. Representing very little, if any, American values that I believe in, I just could not contemplate a Trump victory. A true shock to my system, I did not fully wake to reality until this first week of the administration, and what a week it has been.
Here is my summary of what the Trump Regime has done in the first week: decided to build a wall, pull out from TPP, renegotiate NAFTA, insist that Mexico will pay for a wall to keep Mexicans out of the United States, repeal the Affordable Care Act even though there is no replacement for it, have one of our best allies cancel a meeting between the Mexican President and Trump, signed a waiver to allow his nominee for defense to serve, declared his inauguration day as a National Day of Patriotic Devotion, frozen regulations, even environmental regulations and protections which safeguard America’s health and treaties, insisted that his inauguration had the biggest crowd of any other President ever (and we all know how concerned Trump is over his size), insisted that 3 to 5 million illegal immigrants voted or he would have won the popular vote, reinstated the Mexico Rule, ordered a federal hiring freeze, asked DAPL and Keystone to resubmit applications for building pipelines and said he would approve them, ordered hiring 10,000 more Immigration and Customs Enforcement Officers, said he will withhold federal funds from Sanctuary Cities, lied about increase of homicides to Republican retreat attendees, says he will send the Feds into Chicago, announced he plans to de-fund things like the national endowment for the arts and climate change and violence against women act and transgender LGBT equality and public television (this list is so long I cannot even go into it here), announced that Steve Bannon was correct in saying the media is the opposition party even though a free press is in the first amendment and vital to democracy, signed an Executive Order banning immigrants from seven Muslim countries (but not from Saudi Arabia where several terrorists have come from), and worst of all, appointed Steve Bannon, a white nationalist from Breitbart news, to the National Security Council, where he will join right wing nut General Flynn who says that Islam is something we should fear. He has limited the roles of the National Director of Intelligence and the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Do I have it right? Well, I can’t mention every crazy thing this narcissistic, megalomaniac has done, but that is the gist. And Republicans have mostly remained silent. And Democrats had better get vocal and step up to the plate.
Are you fucking kidding me?
No. This is not a joke. As a matter of fact, this is one of the most terrifying weeks in American history. What do I plan to do? Resist. I am contacting, daily, my representatives and senators (big help, right? Ted Cruz and John Cornyn and Pete Sessions!), I am signing up for and joining protests, writing, speaking up, and donating to the causes I care about most. Which is all of them, really, but we all have to make choices. I am contacting Paul Ryan and Marc Rubio and John McCain and Lindsey Graham, whom I believe to be sane Americans and Republicans. I am going to volunteer and canvas and do phone banks for progressive candidates, climate change, protection for women and children and speech and healthcare and .... stand up for our constitution, our American values, and for America’s reputation. I refuse to allow anyone to consider any of these actions “normal”. I am not even going to proofread or rephrase anything in this article.
What are you going to do?
