Idina Menzel: 'Glee' Wanted Her To Play Lea Michele's Mom At Personal Low Point (VIDEO)

Idina Menzel On Playing Lea Michele's Mom On 'Glee'

Idina Menzel visited "The Talk" (weekdays, CBS) to discuss her upcoming PBS special.

On "Idina Menzel Live: Barefoot at the Symphony" (Wed., Mar. 7, 8 p.m. EST on PBS), the Tony Award-winning Broadway, TV and recording artist will sing "Poker Face."

Of course, she initially covered the Lady Gaga track with Lea Michele on the first season "Glee" and thanks the job for giving her a new song to sing on her special.

"Everybody thinks it's going to be so glamorous, so cool, you're on 'Glee,' you know, a hit show or whatever," she told the ladies of "The Talk." "I just had a baby and I was feeling really fat and like I was never gonna work again. And I'm looking at the script and it says I'm going to play the mother of Lea Michele, who, in real life is 25 years old," Menzel says with a laugh. "I was like, 'This is not the best day of my life.'"

Still, Menzel -- who plays Shelby, the woman who gave Michele's character Rachel Berry up for adoption as a teen -- looked on the bright side. And thankfully, the stint led to a recurring role as well as new material.
