37 Ignorant Things These Sisters Commonly Hear About Adoption

Mom Kim Kelley-Wagner has created a photo series showcasing some of the hurtful things she and her two daughters have heard regarding adoption. She writes on Facebook:

I have tried to explain to my daughters that people do not say these things to be mean, they say them out of ignorance, which is why I am sharing some of them. Words are powerful, they can become tools or weapons, choose to use them wisely.

Ann Brenoff, senior writer for The Huffington Post and mom to two children adopted from China, noted: "This photo project is causing some in the foreign adoption community to squirm."

One commenter wrote on Facebook: "Adoptees don't need flashy reminders of what's going on. We LIVE it every day."

Brenoff disagrees.

"Teaching your children that they don't need to be victims is empowering," she says. "I've taught my children how to respond to uncomfortable comments when they hear them by my own responses. Sometimes I just ignore and sometimes I teach in a non-hateful way."
