In Praise Of A White Shirt

While of course they never go out of style, white shirts have rarely been quite as must-have as now. A perfect choice for this transitional time of year, the white shirts we love most are both feminine and modern. Revealing all sorts of exciting and unique details, they are anything but basic.

Best of all, they are the most versatile pieces you can own. Wear a classic white shirt and dark pant or skirt to the workplace with total ease. Accessorize your look with a high heel and drop earring and you're ready for cocktails or dinner. We think the white and black "uniform," chic and sharp, is suited for formal occasions too.

On the runways:

Valentino A lesson in layering: Untuck your white shirt and add a cropped top or sweater for a thoroughly modern proportion. Add a black skirt or pants and basta!

Osman A regal ruff and cuffs elevate the classic shirt. The high-waisted trouser echoes the drama with a wavy peplum.

Carolina Herrera The so-called Queen of the White Shirt reinterprets her favorite item time and again. This season's version, with its neat fit and black buttons, complements a feminine midi skirt in a graphic print.

Preen by Thornton Bregazzi Cascading ruffles at the arm and hem of this blouse balance voluminous black pants, so beautifully.

Stella McCartney An obi-like sash defines the waist and adds drama to this slouchy tunic top. Worn with a pleated ankle-length skirt, it can go from day or evening with a change of accessories.

When shopping for white shirts and a black skirt or pant to create your arsenal of interchangeable options:

Try a touch of tuxedo: We love the interesting detail of this type of shirt, whether it's the raw-edged bib appliques of the Theory blouse or the pin-tucked detail of the 3.1 Philip Lim fil coupe blouse in antique white. Untucked with a black pant, they'd look smart and chic.

Go for loose and structured:
The Vince top, with its semi-fitted silhouette and long sleeves with wide cuffs, would look lovely with a high-waisted pant or a midi skirt. So would the DKNY with its crisp, slightly cropped design, sculpted shoulders and pretty sleeves.

Revel in interesting details: We are so intrigued by this Yigal Azrouël blouse with its pleated trumpet sleeves and lace inset. And the pleats and ruffle trim of the Gap shirt. Opposite ends of the price spectrum, these two white shirts are both conversation starters.
