Today is Inauguration Day for the 45th President of the United States. It's the day the torch is passed to the next leader. A fellow human being will take an oath to protect a global superpower. It is an awe-inspiring undertaking.
No matter what you think of the next president, or whether he is the candidate you would have chosen, he starts his job today.
So many memorable quotes came from inaugural speeches that still strike a chord decades or centuries later.
In 1961, John F. Kennedy said, "Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country."
In 1933 Franklin D. Roosevelt said, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."
And in 1865, Abraham Lincoln said, "With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation's wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan, to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations."
Peace. That's what everyone wants. I hope the next president of the United States is able to bring people together for the better of the country and the world. And I hope the people he represents never forget that they have the power to be the change they wish to see.
As Barack Obama once said, "Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek."
