Photos Of India's Deadly Heat Wave Show People Seeking Respite From The Scorching Sun

These Photos Show Life In The Sweltering Heat Wave That's Killing Hundreds In India

India has been scorched by a heat wave in recent weeks that has claimed hundreds of lives and sent Indians scrabbling for any available shade.

Over 1,000 people have died in the severe heat in the past week, and officials are urging people to remain indoors, the BBC reports. In the worst-hit southeastern states of Andhra Pradesh and Telengana, temperatures reached between 113 and 118 degrees Fahrenheit (45 and 48 degrees Celsius). Most of the casualties of the heat wave were killed by heat stroke and dehydration, officials told HuffPost India.

Meteorologists said the sweltering temperatures are expected to remain for several more days, before monsoon rains should arrive in the south and provide some respite, CNN reports. Climate experts told Indian newspaper The Hindustan Times that the country had not experienced such intense heat in a decade.

Take a look at the photos below to see how Indians are coping with the severe heat wave.
