Emotional Ad Starring Lesbian Couple Challenges India's Anti-Gay Laws

Homosexuality may be a criminal offense in India, but that hasn't stopped beautiful ads like this one from challenging the country's acceptance of same-sex couples.

Titled "The Visit," the ad for Anouk Ethnic apparel features a lesbian couple getting ready to meet one of the women's parents for the first time. Time noted that since it was released 10 days ago, the online video has been viewed 3 million times.

"We tried to avoid the stereotypes associated with gay people," Avishek Ghosh, a partner at the production house who made the video, told the Times of India. "There was no one woman looking more masculine or feminine in the film. We tried to give it a candid feel like it is any other couple being apprehensive about meeting the parents."

While the ad has been hailed as a first, Indian news site Daily O noted that a much shorter, less emotionally wrought ad for Fastrack watches featured a lesbian couple two years ago.

India made homosexual sex acts a crime punishable by 10 years in prison in 2013, but activists are continually challenging the ruling through different media channels. Last month, Indian gay rights advocate Harish Iyer made headlines when his family published India's first-known man-seeking-man matrimonial ad in a newspaper.
