Movie audiences haven't seen the last of Robert Langdon. Sony announced on Tuesday that Dan Brown's latest Langdon novel, "Inferno," will arrive in theaters on Dec. 18, 2015. Tom Hanks will reprise his role as Langdon; he last played the character in 2009's "Angels & Demons."
Released in May, Brown's "Inferno" has been yet another smash hit for the author, so it goes to reason that the film will follow suit. "The Da Vinci Code," the first Brown novel adapted for the big screen, earned $758 million around the world after its release in 2006. "Angels & Demons," while not as much of a phenomenon as its screen predecessor, still grossed $485 million worldwide. (Brown's "Angels & Demons" novel actually came out before his "The Da Vinci Code" book.)
That "Inferno" has a date is somewhat surprising, if only because it means Sony has jettisoned plans for "The Lost Symbol," Brown's 2009 Langdon novel. As Deadline.com reported, Danny Strong ("The Hunger Games: Mockingjay") had been working on that adaptation. David Koepp will write the script for "Inferno."
In question, however, is the film's director. Ron Howard was in charge of the first two films, but he was not going to return for "The Lost Symbol." The Los Angeles Times reports that no director is set on "Inferno" at the moment, but Deadline.com claims that Howard is the choice for "Inferno." Howard's involvement was picked up by other sites, including HitFix.
