Parents’ Day would be devastating in the “Star Wars” universe.
Until now, the movies have treated protagonists’ parentages like veritable games of Guess Who? Whether we’re watching Luke or Rey or Anakin, we’re left to theorize and agonize over the identity of their parents while the plot moves on to galaxies far, far away.
But not this time.
Thanks to the new international “Rogue One” trailer, we finally know the identity of a main character’s daddy ― and exactly what he’ll be doing. Previously, actor Mads Mikkelsen said he is playing protagonist Jyn Erso’s (Felicity Jones) father. Now, the new trailer reveals that Erso’s dad sends the message that tips the rebels off to the Death Star, the Empire’s weapon of mass destruction that Luke Skywalker destroys in 1977’s “Star Wars: A New Hope.” Since “Rogue One” is all about the rebels’ attempts to steal plans for the Death Star ― so they can figure out how to attack it ― the guy obviously has a pretty important role to play.
There you go. Mystery solved. And if you need more incentive to check it out, the Darth Vader reveal at the end of the trailer is cooler every time you watch:
"Rogue One" flies into theaters in December.
