"Socially cautious music enthusiast starts a music blog" - that should be the real headline.
Hi all! My name is Ingrid Vasquez and while I may be known for a couple of bylines about social justice issues (specifically dealing with Latinos) my passion lies in music. So because of that, I invite you to follow my new music blog "inthegridmusic"'.
#inthegrid music will feature my daily song of the day. This is something I'm calling "#SongBlogIV" and will also be viewable through Twitter and Instagram through a search of the hashtag. #inthegridmusic however, will be an extension from my #songoftheday. I'll comment a bit on the song through daily posts (Monday to Friday) and will also feature some music news and/or interesting information relation to that song.
Here is an example:
12.8.15 #SongBlogIV: "Easy Love" by Sigala
If you're an Ellen fan you might recognize Lucky Aces in the music video. They were tapped to star in the video for this British musician after appearing on her show. The song is big in the UK but should be big in the US since it featured an infectious sample of ABC by the Jackson 5!
Ellen might have not been the best judge on American Idol, but she does have a knack for giving up and coming artists or internet superstars their start on American television. It happened with Lucky Aces:
but there are multiple other artists we grew to love because of her. Here are just a few.
1. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis
Mackemore and Ryan Lewis made their television show on Ellen back when the world was first being introduced to the 56th Grammy Awards Song of the Year nominee "Same Love". It became the unofficial anthem for the legalization of same-sex marriage and gave the world a reintroduction to "activist hip-hop"
2. Sofia Grace and Rosie
2011 in viral videos was all about Sofia Grace and Rosie's cover of "Superbass" by Nicki Minaj. The adorable pint size duo (age 12 and 9 respectfully) traveled to the US from their home in Essex, England and became Ellen show staples covering multiple pop anthems and franchising to other tv, film, and book ventures. Nicki said it best: "We feel like we're watching a journey that's about to be amazing." She couldn't have been more right.
Rudimental, a platinum selling British group, debuted their Ed Sheeran collaboration for the first time in the US on Ellen. Although together as a group for 5 years now, their Ellen performance helped them finally break in the Billboard charts!
4. Chet Faker
Australian singer songwriter found gold on Ellen making his US television debut! While his music video for Gold was nominated as one of the top music videos of 2014 by Entertainment Weekly it was ultimately his Ellen performance that propelled him to opportunities such as performing at Coachella!
The Music Minute:
- Grammy's: the nominations for the 58th Grammy Awards were announced yesterday. To no one's surprise, Kendrick Lamar received multiple nominations in what people are calling the Grammy's effort to win Hip-hop artists/fans back again. Whatever the case may be, he leads with 11 nominations and is the first artist since 1984 to have more than 10 nominations in one night. This record was held by Michael Jackson. No big deal right?
Here are a few of my thoughts but do expect a more concise and detailed post about the nominations in the very near future:
*Tori Kelly (not a big fan but she has a lot of hustle so I'm happy she got a nomination)
*Little Big Town (they won't win for song of the year but still nice to see a country artist in that category)
*Chris Stapleton (nicest dude in the country world so you can't help but be happy for his album of the year nomination. Maybe he'll be the Beck of 2016? Not a Taylor Swift hater but Taylor is too young to get 2 album of the year Grammy's under her belt. If she doesn't win this will be the reason why. HOWEVER ... I do think she's a little more deserving of album of the year for 1989 than she was for Fearless.
*Tamar Braxon (R&B performance nominee ... she's had a hard 2015 so hopefully she'll finally win a Grammy)
*"See You Again" ... don't be mad at me y'all but this song is overrated - and overplayed. BUT I can stand behind Wiz Khalifa winning his first Grammy along with new comer Charlie Puth)
*Hamilton (Musical theater album nominee. I'm a fan.)
"Nina Simone ..... LOVE Nina Simone so I like the Best Music Film nomination but Amy Winehouse truly deserves the win.
*Jidenna - They called him a one hit wonder but he got a Grammy nomination! So excited for Big Sean (One Man Can Change The World) too but like last year, the Best Rap/Sung collab. category is filled with some of my favorite songs of the year so I won't be too disappointed in he loses. The other nominees? Only (Nicki) I LOVE THIS SONG, These Walls (Kendrick) (Not my favorite Kendrick song but I get why its nominated), and Glory (Common/ John Legend). My prediction is that Kendrick will take it.
*ASAP (Video of the Year nominee for LSD! He keeps straying away from Rap so hopefully this will keep him performing)
*Kelly Clarkson and Maroon 5 (two Grammy favorites who are not surprising but still nice to see on the list)
*Justin Biebers nomination (yes I said it. This makes me happy because it was in the dance recording category for Where Are U Now .... I think Skrillex and Diplo have a really good chance of taking it)
*Elle King (Ex's and Oh's)
*Fetty Wap! (Best Rap Performance and Song for Trap Queen ... Nicki pointed it out at the AMA's that Fetty wasn't getting a lot of love on the award shows (which I agree) so these nominations are great! )
and the Empire soundtrack (not a surprise but I've listened to all of it on repeat so it makes me excited)!!!
PS: For all the people disappointed that Rihanna didn't get nominated .... the Grammy's have favorites so once she strays away from the Pop/dance world she doesn't tend to get a lot love. Y'all remember Rated R?)
- Kanye: Kim Kardashian has birthed a saint - Saint West to be precise. The son of the pop culture mega couple finally got a name after his December 5th birth.
