I've been dancing since I was two years old. When I was younger, dance was just for fun, but as I got older, I became more and more serious about dance. When I was six I started to dance competitively. Now, when people ask me what sport I play, my answer is always that I dance. I usually get some funny looks. So, clearly, there is a question in people's minds about whether dance is a sport or an art.

I believe that dance is a sport because it has the same components as any other sport. To be able to dance well, one needs to be flexible, strong, have stamina, have endurance and most importantly have a love for what they do. In any other sport you need to work hard, and that is exactly what dancers do. For example, most dancers practice between five to 10 hours a week.

Dance is not only physically exhausting but also mentally exhausting. First, there is the pressure to perform. Then, there is also the pressure to remember your dance sequence and get all your steps right. Also, in order to improve, a dancer must constantly be working on his/her technique so that everything is perfectly on point. As you can see, dance has all the characteristics and is just as demanding as any other sport.

Just because dance is a sport does not mean that it isn't also an art. Dance is an art because with dance you are able to tell a story without using your mouth. Through your choreography and your facial expressions you are able to completely change yourself into another character.

Also, with dance you are able to express emotions. Dancing is a great way to relieve stress and let you just be yourself. Many dancers and choreographers have been known for incredible emotions and stage presence. An example is George Balanchine. Balanchine was a famous choreographer who was and continues to be known for his musicality an expression of emotions. As you can see, dance is also an art.

Clearly dance is very unique activity because it can be classified as both a sport and an art. That is why I love and am passionate about dance. I am able to express myself artistically while getting great exercise and keeping my body physically fit. As and added bonus, I love the friendships I have made through dance.

So, is dance a sport or an art? The answer is that it is both a sport and an art, and a great way to make friends and have fun!
