Do you ever wonder why are so many coaches are struggling to sign clients? It’s a huge problem in this industry. Every single day I speak to coaches who have “just one paying client at the moment”, or are working with pro bono clients but haven’t had any paid work yet at all. And I’m not talking about brand new coaches. Many of them have gotten themselves certified, and/or been coaching for 6 months, a year, or even longer. Yet they’re not even close to turning a profit yet. And I’m not saying that’s wrong, after all, I spent the first 18 months in my coaching biz selling low end sessions - $80-$300 per hour – and almost threw in the towel altogether, because it was just too hard. But something changed for me. In June 2015, sitting in a job interview, faced with the very real prospect of returning to corporate, something inside of me snapped. And I finally reconnected with my purpose. My real reason for quitting corporate and starting my business in the first place. Sure, I didn’t want to waste any more of my life doing meaningless work to line someone else’s pockets, but my REAL DRIVING PURPOSE was to… > Transform lives – by helping release people from the corporate grind and into work they love> Create a legacy for my children – by creating financial independence while doing work that I loved (what better example to set?)> Lead societal change – by founding a charity that seeks to change the way the next generation approaches working life Reconnecting with that purpose, and what I would need to make it happen, is what drove me to get crazy serious about creating crazy results in my business. It’s what caused me to get over my bullshit money story – after all, there’s no way I could devote my life to this purpose unless I could create the income to support myself and my family for a lifetime, and have plenty left over to plough into changing the world. It’s what allowed me to flip the bird to fear, stop playing the game like an amateur, and focus my attention on doing exactly what it takes to create clients and income. And as time has gone on, and I’ve turned the first part of my purpose into a reality, and started in on the second, I’ve had a realisation. The realisation that the people who think that money and sales are unsavoury topics, or that they should be a lesser priority – reduced in importance, below the transforming lives part (which, incidentally, is impossible because you can’t effectively do one without making the other) – actually don’t have a big enough purpose. All that they see, is the outside stuff – the productivity and the financial results – but they don’t see the purpose that drives those results in the first place. And so, because they don’t have a big enough purpose driving them forward, they allow fears of failure, being judged, and feeling overwhelmed to keep them DIYing, procrastinating, and client-less.
