David Coleman, one of the architects of the Common Core State Standards Initiative, thinks so.

"The Common Core is common sense," says Coleman, who, in October, will become the president of the College Board. "For the first time, teachers and kids are going to be able to focus their work on what really matters most. To get them ready for college and career."

He spoke with Jane Williams on Bloomberg Radio's Bloomberg EDU about the math and literacy standards being adopted in 46 states and the District of Columbia. [Disclosure: I work with Bloomberg Radio for Bloomberg EDU.]

"Republicans and Democrats, I know it's strange to say this, worked together," says Coleman. Governors from both sides of the aisle and [the Council of] Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) came together..."

And thus, the the idea of common core curriculum state standards took off.

In the meantime, this week, "State standards are dividing the GOP," reports Alyson Klein, for Education Week from the Republican convention in Tampa, Florida.
