On a recent segment of HuffPost Live, fashion designer and "Project Runway: All Stars" judge Isaac Mizrahi had some insightful things to say about the term "plus-size" and its role in the fashion industry.
In response to a reader's question about the lack of contestants who "design for plus-size persons" on the hit competition show "Project Runway," Mizrahi explains why plus-size shouldn't really be a defining term in the first place.
"I don't want to speak to a plus-sized woman differently than I speak to a woman," he says, recounting stories of his childhood when he was constantly "ushered off to the husky section," which had some long-term emotional effects.
Mizrahi then talks about the "right way" that the fashion industry should be embracing various sizes. "I don't like segregation, I like incorporation, I like integration," he says when it comes to clothing. "If you're going to do clothes, you need to do them in a whole size range."
The designer mentions that QVC, the current distributor of his brand, is great about featuring his styles from XXS to 3XL. However, retail sites like ASOS and Forever 21 have separate plus-size sections, while stores like Lane Bryant and Torrid cater to customers who wear larger sizes.
