Lifetime TV

Now, before you go jumping the gun, let me explain what I mean...Ryan Zamo’s appearance on ‘Project Runway Fashion Startup’ aired this past Thursday. The show presented viewers with his struggle over acne and his organic acne products… and then just forgot to include his real pitch...

But at least the segment showed one true fact about him; that an investment can’t buy passion, dedication or a will to succeed.

27-year-old Ryan Zamo appeared on ‘Project Runway Fashion Startup’ this past Thursday with his organic skincare company ZskinCosmetics.Com. It would have been great...except the show seemed to forget to include his actual pitch to investors. Talking with Zamo back in May after filming wrapped for his appearance, and then seeing the segment air, left me and anyone else that knows him completely dumbfounded to say the least.

When I posted the article about the experience Zamo had, we had no idea that the entrepreneurs pitch was something they would just leave out. However, viewers still poured in supporting the young entrepreneur, but it’s unfortunate that they didn’t get to see his actual pitch.

When I spoke with him originally, Zamo said, “The investors really liked my products! I’m really hoping that the show opens up opportunities to get my anti-aging products into retail stores.” That’s right, anti-aging products and retail stores?…I don’t recall seeing anything in the episode about his anti-aging products, or the conversation about his past retail experiences.

Also left out, was how Zamo created his anti-aging line for his mother, who passed away last year. The story behind his anti-aging line was what actually brought on his breakdown on the show, Zamo originally told me “It was so heartwarming because all the investors cried and consoled me, Christine talked about how she experienced a similar situation, and we really had a connection after it”. You can see where that part of the conversation was, right before they cut to Christine saying, “That’s a tough thing to do for being so young.” I mean, I understand you have to cut down a 2 hour meeting, but whats the point of cutting out his actual pitch?

If you simply google it, you will see he previously turned down multiple offers to go into retail, “I finally decided it’s time to do it, but I just don’t have the capital to do so right now, that’s why I figured it would be a great opportunity to go on this show.”, Zamo said back in May. He turned down not just one, but two offers to go into global Sephora stores. He also turned down retail stores in Australia, Japan, China and the Philippines.

But then the editors really got lazy and made it seem like he did $375k in total sales….yet Zamo actually did $375k in sales off his anti-aging line alone. But what shocked me the most, was how they cut out what could have been the most beneficial part to both Katia and Ryan.

Not knowing she was going to be an investor on the show, it was a twist of fate when he appeared in front of her. As Gary asked him what stores he had turned down previously, Zamo rattled off the list, and the last one had Gary, Christine and Rebecca’s heads turning… because the first offer from a retail store for his anti-aging products was from Birchbox. Yes, Katia found his products weeks after they launched, but Zamo said he wasn’t ready for retail, and so he turned it down. Why wouldn’t they show the fact that Birchbox is one step ahead with discovering the next up and coming products? You can see where that conversation happened too, right before Katia says, “You're right, we can help you”, then they cut to, “But I’m going to have to pass for now”. They left out the 20 minute conversation in between that.

But regardless, Zamo says he has no animosity towards it. As of today, Zamo says he was able to accomplish everything he went on the show for; he’s re-done his branding, got all new packaging, a new website, and most of all; he is talking with buyers from companies such as Walmart, Harmon, Bed Bath and Beyond and multiple other stores who are interested in carrying Z Skin Cosmetics.

But at least the segment showed one true fact about him; that an investment can’t buy passion, dedication or a will to succeed.
