Jackson Memorial Hospital Historical Images Show Modest Beginning (PHOTOS)

"We've allowed it to deteriorate," said Commissioner Audrey Edmonson, who sponsored the bill authorizing the bond referendum. "The hospital has to come up to the 21st century; that's the only way we're going to be able to compete."

In its 95 years, the hospital has come a long way from its modest beginnings in 1918.

Now with 1,550 beds, JMH is the third-largest public hospital and third-largest teaching hospital in the country.

It's home to amazing medical feats -- like removing a fishing spear from a teen's brain as well as the sensational -- Ronald Poppo was treated there after having his face chewed off in a bizarre attack.
