The sudden death of Afeni Shakur on Monday night took many by surprise, including family friend Jada Pinkett Smith.

After discovering the sad news, Pinkett Smith shared her condolences via a Facebook post on Tuesday. She was in New York on May 3, which she mentioned in the post, to attend VH1’s Mother’s Day event, "Dear Mama," which was inspired by Tupac's popular 1995 song of the same title.

"Today I woke up to the news that Afeni had passed. My first thought was of Sekyiwa (Tupac's half sister) and the entire clan that loved Afeni," she wrote in the post. "Then I remembered that I was in N.Y. to attend a Mother's Day event named after a song written about Afeni, 'Dear Mama.' My heart tightened and then all kinds of memories flooded in."

The “Hawthorne” actress went on to recall the time she spent with Shakur's mother during a visit to actress Jasmine Guy's house where she noticed Afeni shared a lot of the same traits as her son.

"I got to see where Pac got his passion, his ideals for equality and justice but most of all his depth of thinking," she wrote. "Afeni was a giant in her own right. Today she is reunited with her son and Sekyiwa has two majestic angels to look after her."
