Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston, a frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy, is under investigation for an alleged sexual assault, as first reported by TMZ. The alleged incident occurred on Dec. 7, 2012 and is still being investigated by the Tallahassee Police Department.

“The case is open and active and the victim is working with the State Attorney’s Office,” Officer David Northway, a TPD spokesman, told the Tallahassee Democrat.

The investigation was confirmed by the Florida State Athletic Department as well as Winston's attorney on Wednesday, reported The Associated Press. No charges have been filed.

"We are aware of a matter that was investigated by the Tallahassee Police Department almost a year ago," Florida State said in a statement obtained by USA Today Sports. "Because the investigation has not been closed by TPD, we cannot comment further at this time. We look forward to a speedy resolution of the issue. There is no change in Jameis Winston's status."

The Tallahassee Democrat obtained a heavily redacted incident report from the Tallahassee Police Department and spoke with Winston's attorney, who indicated the football star had not been interviewed by police. The report did not mention Winston by name and described the suspect as between 5' 9" and 5' 11" tall and weighing 240 pounds, according to the Tallahassee Democrat. Florida State's official athletic website lists Winston as 6' 4" and 224 pounds.

“This case has been going on for over a year. The case was basically closed and we’re not sure why it’s opened up," attorney Tim Jansen told The Tallahassee Democrat on Wednesday. "We’ve been cooperating with the law enforcement agencies and we’re hoping to get a quick resolution in favor of Mr. Winston."

A 19-year-old redshirt freshman, Winston has emerged as a star for the Seminoles as they have opened the season 9-0.
