Ousted Arizona state Sen. Russell Pearce, the Republican behind the state's immigration law, S.B. 1070, isn't likely to get any help from Gov. Jan Brewer (R) this year, even though she supported him in the past.
When asked by the Arizona Capitol Times whether she would endorse Pearce in his bid for the state senate, she was dismissive.
"I'm not inclined to," she said.
The two were formerly allies in the fight over Arizona's immigration law, which passed in 2010 when he was president of the state senate. Brewer's support was boosted in the immediate aftermath of the law, despite national controversy, but it ended up having negative consequences for Pearce, who was recalled in November 2011. He has also been plagued by questions about ethics violations and, more recently, allegations that the motivations behind S.B. 1070 were racist.
The longtime state lawmaker is attempting to reenter the state senate this year, but first must defeat fellow Republican Bob Worsley in the upcoming GOP primary. Brewer told the Capitol Times she hadn't given "any thought" to whether she would endorse Worsley.
Worsley already has support from one prominent Arizona Republican. Retiring U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl endorsed Pearce's challenger last month, a somewhat rare foray into local politics in his state.
"Bob Worsley is a solid conservative with good ideas and business world experience," Kyl said in a statement at the time. "He's exactly the type of candidate Arizona needs."
