A political action committee organized by Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) to help sway elections received heavy backing from Las Vegas hotellier and billionaire GOP backer Sheldon Adelson in the final weeks of the 2012 election season.
According to a report from Howard Fischer of Arizona's Capitol Media Services, Adelson and his wife Miriam gave a combined $250,000 to Brewer's Jan PAC on Oct. 19, a date that allowed the committee to avoid reporting the donation until after the elections.
With that contribution, the Adelsons become the single largest backer of Jan PAC. The $250,000 sum accounts for more than than a quarter of the total $909,268 Brewer raised over 2012 -- and Fischer says Brewer could be stashing some of this cash for a future run.
Adelson spent around $150 million on Republican efforts during the 2012 elections, almost all of it in support of candidates who did not win. Despite his losing record, he recently told the Wall Street Journal that he had every intention of doubling his contributions to GOP causes during the next cycle.
And Brewer herself has already become part of the discussions about that next cycle. Speculation about her potential presidential aspirations were stirred earlier this month when Politico reported that Brewer had met with Adelson in Las Vegas. Brewer is set to be term-limited out of another run for governor in 2014, though some have argued that she is eyeing a loophole that will allow her to seek a third term.
