Janet Mock Sounds Off On Marissa Alexander Case

Transgender writer and advocate Janet Mock sounded off on Marissa Alexander, who was sentenced in 20 years in prison after firing a warning shot at her estranged husband in 2010.

Alexander, a mother of three, has been at the epicenter of debate over Florida's controversial "stand-your-ground" laws. Critics of the law say the laws, which allow individuals to use deadly force in cases of self-defense, are skewed against defendants who, like Alexander, are black.

"I think that we also have to respect Marissa's agency and her choice of representation to say what is best for her in this situation," Mocked noted. "As Marissa's case shows, black and brown girls do not benefit from [stand your ground] laws."

Alexander was convicted of with assault with a deadly weapon, aiming and firing in the direction of three people, according to reports. Her case has often been compared to that of George Zimmerman, who was acquitted of second-degree murder and manslaughter in the fatal 2012 shooting of Trayvon Martin after arguing that he acted in self-defense.
