Janis Joplin Death Anniversary: Legendary Singer Died 43 Years Ago Today

Janis Joplin Died 43 Years Ago Today

Friday (Oct. 4) marks the 43rd anniversary of Janis Joplin's untimely death at age 27.

The legendary musician was born in Port Arthur, Texas, on Jan. 19, 1943, and would have turned 70 earlier this year. Joplin became a counterculture icon, embodying the spirit of the late '60s. She was known for her powerful, uninhibited stage presence, both as the lead singer of Big Brother and the Holding Company and in her solo career.

While Joplin's classic rock anthems -- "Piece of My Heart," "Down on Me" and "Me and Bobby McGee" among them -- continue to inspire new generations of artists, the singer has been the subject of countless tributes. The latest, “A Night With Janis Joplin,” is currently in previews on Broadway.
