Jason Collins Sought Advice From Lance Bass Before Coming Out As Gay

Jason Collins Sought Advice From This Gay Celebrity Before Coming Out

Jason Collins' coming out has already been praised as a turning point for the gay community. As it turns out, the 11-year NBA veteran sought help from a high-profile celebrity friend immediately after discussing his sexuality in the new issue of Sports Illustrated.

On the April 29 edition of his SiriusXM radio show, pop singer Lance Bass revealed that he spoke to Collins earlier in the day. Collins, who reportedly called Bass at the urging of actress Joanna Garcia (a mutual friend), sought advice on how to deal with coming out to the public. (Listen to Bass' chat below)

"He’s been trying to plan this for a very long time, contemplating if he wanted to do this," Bass revealed on his "Dirty Pop With Lance Bass" show. "In fact, he said he was going to call me months ago but was too scared, because he wanted to tell me."

The former N'Sync-er said the pair spoke frankly about the pop star's experience with his own coming out: "I told him, 'Look, this is what I wish would have happened when I came out…because when I came out I had 24 hours to decide what was going to happen, because basically [People] magazine said, ‘We’re doing it with or without you.'"
