Jason Kidd, Knicks Agree On Deal To Bring Point Guard To New York: REPORT

Report: Knicks Land Jason Kidd

Unable to land their first choice of superstar point guard in his late 30s, the Knicks have reportedly made a surprise swoop for another.

Less than 24 hours after losing the Steve Nash sweepstakes, the Knicks lured 39-year-old point guard Jason Kidd to New York, as was first reported by Marc Stein of ESPN.

Hours before the deal was reportedly agreed upon, Kidd seemed set on re-signing with Dallas. The Knicks, meanwhile, seemed more preoccupied with retaining a point guard -- Jeremy Lin -- than with bringing in a bona fide star at the position. Now they may be about to accomplish both goals.

David Aldridge of NBA.com confirmed the move, also reporting that the Knicks will likely match any offer for Jeremy Lin who is a restricted free agent. The Houston Rockets reportedly made a multi-year offer to Lin late Wednesday night.

The Mavs were so close to striking a deal with the 10-time All-Star that some media outlets reported that an agreement had been actually been made earlier on Thursday. Per Stein's report, Kidd was close to making a verbal agreement with Dallas on a three-year deal worth $9 million but opted to join Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire at Madison Square Garden.

Of course, the Knicks were reported to be the frontrunners to land Nash in a sign-and-trade early in the afternoon on the Fourth of July. But Kobe Bryant and the Lakers swooped in to make a deal for the two-time MVP. Unlike with Nash, there was never a widely held belief that Kidd would land in New York, making this deal all the more surprising.
