James Bond may be unstoppable in Sam Mendes’ “Skyfall,” but it’s Javier Bardem’s critically acclaimed performance as the deranged Raoul Silva that has the actor receiving a slew of nominations -- including his latest for Best Supporting Actor from the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA).
On Wednesday, BAFTA released their list of nominations which included eight nominations for the latest 007 installment. Bardem will go up against Alan Arkin (“Argo”), Philip Seymour Hoffman (“The Master”), Tommy Lee Jones (“Lincoln”), and Christoph Waltz (“Django Unchained”) for the title while Bond co-star Judi Dench will be vying for her own BAFTA statuette for Best Supporting Actress.
But the 43-year-old actor is no stranger to this type of attention for a performance. In 2007 the Spanish star became one of a handful in the industry to receive an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, a Critics’ Choice Award, a Golden Globe Award and a SAG Award for the same role -- at the time the awards were given for his portrayal of the psychopathic Anton Chigurh in “No Country For Old Men.”
And it seems the Oscar-winning actor would’ve been well on his way to do the same with “Skyfall’s” Silva, managing to snag nominations for a SAG Award (airing Jan. 27) and Critics’ Choice Award (airing Jan. 10), had he not been snubbed for a Golden Globe nomination.
Nevertheless, the actor remains a favorite for the 85th Academy Awards, which is scheduled to announce nominations on Thursday, Jan. 10. His first Oscar in 2007 for “Best Supporting Actor” made history when he became the first Spanish actor to receive the honor.
BAFTA winners will be announced on Feb. 10 during a ceremony in London.
