Jeff Daniels' Agents Thought 'Dumb And Dumber' Would Ruin His Career

During his visit to "Chelsea Lately," Jeff Daniels was talking about the upcoming sequel to "Dumb and Dumber." But Chelsea Handler wanted to know how a serious actor like Daniels got involved in the goofy comedy, co-starring Jim Carrey, in the first place. It turns out, it was all his idea -- and it definitely caused some friction for him.

“The night before I was going to fly out and start the wardrobe and rehearsals and all that, my agents called me on the phone and said, ‘There’s no way you’re doing this movie. You will ruin your career,'" Daniels sad. "And I said, you know, ‘Go to hell.'”

He went on to say that his agents actually threatened to pull him from the film. But he loved the script and absolutely had to do the movie. Of course, it paid off. "Dumb and Dumber" went on to become one of Daniels' top-grossing films -- behind only the family-friendly "101 Dalmations." And it didn't hurt his "serious" career in the slightest.

Now fans can enjoy the comedic side of Jeff Daniels in projects like the "Dumb and Dumber" sequel, going into poduction this September, as well as the serious side, seen on HBO's "The Newsroom" every Sunday at 10 p.m. ET.
