ESPN's apology for its Michael Sam shower coverage didn't calm down St. Louis Rams head coach Jeff Fisher.
"I'm extremely disappointed in her piece. I think it's unethical," Fisher told the St. Louis Post-Dipatch, on Wednesday. "I think it's very, very unprofessional. Not only the piece itself, the content. The manner in which [Josina Anderson] did it."
On Tuesday, ESPN reporter Josina Anderson did a segment at Rams camp about the showering habits Michael Sam, the first openly gay player ever to be drafted into the NFL. Anderson said Sam "is waiting to kind of take a shower, as not to make his teammates feel uncomfortable," while also noting that two of his teammates said they hadn't noticed. After receiving a negative backlash over the report, ESPN issued a statement of apology:
ESPN regrets the manner in which we presented our report. Clearly yesterday we collectively failed to meet the standards we have set in reporting on LGBT-related topics in sports.
Along with the statement, Fisher said ESPN's head of production and programming called the Rams organization and apologized on Wednesday. But that wasn't enough to hold Fisher back from calling out Anderson over how she created her story.
"Obviously she came in, in all likelihood to see if there was gonna be a roster move at the 75 cutdown as it relates to Mike Sam. That didn't happen. But she needed to do something, and it's my understanding that she manufactured this story," Fisher told the St. Louis Post-Dipatch. "She was out of line because she went and contacted several players on their personal time. Misled them with questions and then put this piece together."
While Fisher had a lengthy response to the showering report, Rams defensive end Chris Long needed a little less than 140 characters:
