A shoplifter has pleaded guilty to stealing meat by putting it down his pants, but customers at the store may have a beef with what the business did with the recovered roasts.
Jeffery Arthur Feehan, 29, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to charges that included stealing $71.32 of meat from two grocery stores in the Canadian town of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.
Employees at on Atlantic Superstore watched Feehan put food in a basket, then take it into the bathroom where he stuck it down his pants, Dumb As A Blog reports.
Prosecuting attorney Valerie Moore said Feehan's food thefts were characteristic of a recent trend where addicts steal high-value items and exchange them for drugs.
However, even she was shocked that Superstore employees put the stolen meat back on shelves to be sold.
“That sounds strange," she said in court, the Prince Edward Island Guardian reported. "They must have been well-wrapped in plastic given that they were down his pants."
Feehan's defense lawyer, Thane MacEachern, told the court his client was dealing with addiction issues, which led to the thefts.
Douglas also told the judge before sentencing: “I realize drugs are not a good way to go about living,” Feehan said.
Feehan was sentenced to a combined 94 days in jail on top of the 28 he already served while in custody awaiting sentencing, according to the Truro Daily News. In addition, he will have to pay $200 to the victims of crime fund and will be on probation for 18 months.
He is banned from the Superstores in Charlottetown for one year.
A store manager referred questions about its reselling of crotch-tainted meat to the corporate media department, which has not yet responded to press inquiries.
