Prized Football Recruit Charged After Video Shows Him Beating Woman

The 18-year-old plans to play for Mississippi State.

Mississippi State football recruit Jeffery Simmons was charged Monday after a video surfaced showing him punching a woman in a street fight.

The footage shows a man and woman striking another woman repeatedly while she is on the ground. Several bystanders look on.

Simmons was charged with disturbing the peace by fighting and simple assault -- both misdemeanors, Macon (Mississippi) Police Chief Lucious Mason told The Huffington Post.

Simmons was not taken into custody, but will be served with a citation to appear in court along with four others who were also charged in the incident, Mason said.

Mason called the video "disturbing" and said a court date had yet to be determined.

WCBI, which posted video of the incident, said it took place on Thursday.

The highly recruited Simmons, a 6-foot-4, 275-pound defensive end from Noxubee County High School, made news in February when he signed with Mississippi State over Alabama, in-state rival Ole Miss and other schools.

Local outlets reported that Simmons posted an apology to Facebook, saying, "I take full responsibility for my actions." The post mentioned a dispute over insults aimed at deceased nephews. The Facebook page has since been deleted.

"We are aware of the situation," Mississippi State spokesman Bill Martin told HuffPost on Monday before the charges were announced. "As more details become available, we will continue to evaluate the situation."

Martin noted that Simmons was still in high school and not enrolled in the university yet.
